Cox Employees Award Nearly $10,000 to Gulf Coast Schools

Grants for local schools distributed through Cox Charities Innovation in Education Grants

Pensacola, FL – Cox Communications employees have awarded a total of $9,843 in grants to local schools, through Cox Charities Innovation in Education Grants. The program provides employee funded grants of up to $2,500 for classroom programs and curriculum that encourage and promote students’ ingenuity and imagination. Earlier this year, schools were invited to submit applications for funding. This year’s recipients of the Cox Charities Innovation in Education grants are:

  • Antioch Elementary School in Crestview received a $1,528 grant for “Discovering the Code.” This program allows students to learn how to write code in an afterschool program. The grant will allow for more equipment to serve more students.

  • Pensacola’s C.A. Weis Elementary School received $2,500 for the “Lego Learning Lab.” Students will use Lego WeDo kits to create, modify, test and reflect on lessons.
  • How does where you live affect how you live? That’s what students at Crestview High School hope to find out with their $1,000 Cox Charities grant. Students will use small group activities to acquire and present data using STEM, Real-Life Math and Science Applications, Language Arts Skills and the Art of Digital Storytelling.

  • N.B. Cook School of the Arts in Pensacola was funded with $850 for the “Novel Read Aloud” program. The students each have copies of books that are read aloud in class. They are also able to take the books home and read on their own. The program helps the students develop fluency and comprehension while fostering the love for reading.

  • The Okaloosa STEMM Academy in Valparaiso received $2,500 for their “Arriving on the Scene: Collect and Analyze Evidence Like the Pros” program. The grant will allow 60 seventh grade students with relevant and updated materials that will increase their interest and excitement in scientific careers.
  • Fort Walton Beach’s Silver Sands School was awarded $1,465 for their program, “Sensory for Special Needs.” The multi-sensory program will support students with various disabilities at the school. The use of sensory materials is vital for these students to engage in learning activities and develop the skills they need to be successful members of the community.

“This school year has been a very challenging year for administrators, teachers and students,” said David Deliman, vice president of Cox’s Gulf Coast Market. “We salute them for everything they’ve overcome, and this is just a small way to say, ‘thank you.’ Our Gulf Coast employees funded these grants out of their own paychecks to ensure area students have the tools and supplies they need for fun and innovative programs in the classroom.”

In addition to the Innovation in Education grants, Cox Charities offers Community Investment grants to 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations. This grant application will open in August 2021. For more information about Cox Charities, visit www.CoxCharitiesSER.org.
